Scientists have discovered an ancient giant salamander alive in a cave close to the city of Chongqing in China.
These incredible amphibious beasts look somewhat like monsters from a movie, and you might find it hard to believe that they exist and share this beautiful planet with us. But they do, and they can grow to become fairly big!
This recently discovered salamander is over 4.5 feet (1.3 meters) long and weighs 115 pounds (52 kilograms). That's one giant salamander! The salamander is also believed to be very ancient, with experts estimating the age of the salamander to be close to 200 years!
Wild populations of the Chinese Giant Salamander (Andrias davidianus) have declined by more than 80 percent in the last 45 years and it is now considered critically endangered.
