One hundred thousand turtles were released into the Amazon in an effort to repopulate the severely threatened species.
The Bolivian authorities released one hundred thousand hatched Podocnemis expansa and Podocnemis unifilis turtles back into the Amazonian river.
In an effort to try and repopulate several endangered species of turtles, Bolivia’s environment ministry said the purpose was to protect two specific species of turtle, the Podocnemis expansa and Podocnemis unifilis.
Both species of turtle are under severe threat, and strict control around the turtles’ nesting areas are in place to help with repopulation of the species. With actions like these, we can be hopeful that these turtles will naturally repopulate in their habitat in the future!
